Club Events
Our most popular club events are our campouts, and there is some confusion as to how they work. Two of our campouts are official club events (Big Brew on the 1st Saturday of May, and the Summer campout in August). The official days for these are Friday and Saturday nights, when the club reserves half the campground, and folks set up whereever there is space available in our half. The club does not pay the camping fees ... the way the fees are determined is to add up the number of people camping Friday plus the number camping Saturday and divide that into the total cost of the campground (including ice and tip). That is the 'per person per night' fee, which has consistently been from $10 to $12. So if you stay Friday, and you and your spouse/sig other stay Saturday, that is 3 person nights, or $30-$36. Kids are ususally figured at half the adult price, or twofer. For me, I usually stay Friday, and Jeanne and our 2 girls stay Saturday ... for a total of $40-$48. Anyone coming out on Thursday nights are responsible for paying their camping fees ... usually 2 or more members will share a site to reduce the per person cost.
Directions to the campground: It is located at 3937 Highway 81 South, Jonesborough. 753-5359. Probably the easiest way to get there is to take I-26 south to Erwin to the Hwy 81 exit. Turn right toward Jonesborough, go about 5.3 miles and you'll see it on your right. The shortest way would be to take exit 31 in Johnson City, heading toward ETSU. Take a left on Cherokee road and follow it to the end where it intersects with state hwy 81. Turn left and go about 5 or 6 miles and the campground is on your left. Their website is here. For those coming from the west, you can either come thru Jonesborough down 81 about 8 or 10 miles, or come east on hwy 107 to 81, turn right an go a couple of miles.
The place where the club treasury comes in is the meals. The Saturday dinner and Sunday breakfasts are covered by the club. Those that prepare the meals are reimbursed from the treasury. I hope this clears up any confusion.
We just started doing the Fall (October) campout 2 years ago. Participation is much lower, so I think we do it like I explained for the Thursday nights above. I will confirm that and note it here.
